New Jersey Suburbs: Best Towns to Live in Bergen County

As an expert in North Jersey Real Estate, we have identified the best towns to live in Bergen County. Whether you are relocating to the suburbs from New York City or simply looking to upgrade your home in the neighborhood, each town offers a little something different for everyone.

Growing up in Tenafly, New Jersey and attending High School at Dwight Englewood, I have experienced the very best of the suburbs. In fact, it is no wonder many celebrities and athletes choose to live in this area. Below is a list of our favorite towns close to the George Washington Bridge and prime Manhattan.

Best Towns to Live in Bergen County

Englewood

One of the most distinguished Towns in all of Bergen County dating back to the 1600’s, Englewood offers some of the most luxurious Estates on its famed East Hill.  For many years, Eddie Murphy resided at Bubble Hill, a private compound not too far from the Center of Town. Countless other celebrities, including Alicia Keyes, have live in Englewood, as it offers fast convenience to New York City and other desirable locations. The taxes do tend to be high, but for those looking to be near one of the top private Schools in the Country or the Orthodox synagogue on Broad Avenue, the price is well worth the admission. Englewood Cliffs, the adjacent town, also offers simialr value but with much lower taxes. Some of the best attributes of Englewood include:

Tenafly

My original hometown, Tenafly Real Estate has surged in value over the past decade. It has always been a premier destination but it has exploded in popularity in recent years. Many of the homes in the neighborhood offer multiple acres of land, beautiful forestry and privacy. The public School system is excellent and there are several great restaurants in the area. Very close to the Palisades Parkway, it is very accessible to New York City. Taxes are expensive but the overall value with the education system delivers a fair bargain for those interested in the area. Our favorite destinations for locals include:

Alpine

Home to Stevie Wonder, Chris Rock, CC Sabathia and countless other stars, Alpine is a premier residential location for wealthy homebuyers. Since there is no public school system in Alpine, many Parents send their Children to Tenafly High School or some of the upper echelon private schools in the area. Alpine offers many large homes especially those in the Esplanade or Rio Vista sections. Taxes tend to be on the lower side and buyers are afforded with lots of privacy. Many homes are typically situated on multiple acres of land. Without hesitation it is an exception place to live. For those interested in Alpine, our picks include:

Closter/Demarest/Cresskill

With country-like feel, these towns border Tenafly and Alpine. They offer a rural vibe and similar living to the above. If you are unable to find your dream home elsewhere, Closter, Demarest and Cresskill offer excellent living, beautiful homes and terrific school systems. We like the following:

Fort Lee

Named for the site of an American Revolutionary War Military Encampment, Fort Lee is home to the George Washington Bridge and offers easy access to and from New York City. During the past decade, new residential towers have been developed supplementing many of the older Apartment buildings on Horizon Road. Fort Lee offers a convenient lifestyle for many with lots of shops, views of the City and public school system. Our picks include:

Cliffside Park

In recent years, Cliffside Park has become a hot destination for many luxury buyers. With many new duplex developments, including some by well-known contractor Dervo Developers, this is now a trendy neighborhood to live. Located only 15 minutes from Manhattan, Cliffside Park offers stunning views of the Hudson River and spacious homes for all types of buyers. In addition, there are some beautiful Apartment Towers that are a wonderful place to call home. Our favorite local restaurants and destinations include:

Edgewater

Perhaps one of the best towns to live in Bergen County, Edgewater. This terrific City has a New York City feel and offers stunning views of Manhattan. Whether you are looking to buy a beautiful home, luxury Condominium or a multi-level Townhome on the Water, Edgewater offers so much and more. With a European vibe, Edgewater has become a trendy location for all types of buyers. Access to Manhattan via the George Washington Bridge, Ferry service or Lincoln Tunnel is extremely easy.
