The Big Difference: Broker vs Agent vs Realtor
Many buyers and sellers use the terms Broker, Agent and Realtor interchangeably. In fact, they are all very different. Here is the breakdown of each:
- Broker – A licensed Real Estate Broker is at the top of the food chain. This individual has accumulated experience in the industry, passed numerous exams and is now able to operate his/her own Company independently if desired
- Agent – A Real Estate Agent or Salesperson must work under the guidance of a licensed Real Estate Broker. They cannot operate independently and must hang their license or shingle with a Brokerage firm
- Realtor – This individual is a member of the National Association of Realtors (https://www.nar.realtor). A licensed Broker or Agent/Salesperson can each be a realtor, as long as they pay dues and join the National Realtor Association
As you can see, these terms and titles are all very different. Each of these parties can all operate efficiently and effectively, but its important to understand the qualifications of the Real Estate expert you are working with.
