Manhattan penthouse ideas in brick, on Tenafly's East Hill

The Heights at Tenafly was built by Mark-Built Homes, a New Jersey builder run by the Markovitz family for three generations, on roughly five acres off East Clinton Avenue, next to the Cathedral of St. John the Theologian. The community is one tax lot divided into 35 condominium units, numbered 100 through 908 along a private loop called Heights Lane. County records date the individual homes from 2007 to 2010, and when The New York Times profiled Tenafly in 2009 it listed the Heights among the borough's condo projects, with town houses of 3,700 to 5,100 square feet priced from $1.2 million to $1.55 million.

The homes were pitched to buyers who wanted the finishes of a Manhattan penthouse with more space and a shorter trip to the George Washington Bridge than most of Bergen County offers. Coldwell Banker's 2011 sales release describes handmade brick exteriors, architectural columns, arched garage doors, metal roofs, French doors, and balconies, with marble foyers, sweeping custom stairs, oak floors with walnut inlay, and kitchens fitted with Viking and Sub-Zero appliances. Every home has a private elevator serving all three levels, and recent listings pitch the homes both to families and to downsizers leaving large houses.

The final collection of 10 residences, priced from about $950,000 to $1,295,000, sold out within about six months, by mid-2011, in what the builder called a turbulent real estate market. The community won a Sales and Marketing Award for Best Townhome of the Year over $500,000 from the New Jersey Builders Association, and in 2011 the Community Builders and Remodelers Association of New Jersey gave it its Award of Excellence for Best Attached Home over $500,000.
