425 East 13th Street

The A Building was developed by Robert Kaliner, president of the Ascend Group, on a through-block site acquired from Time Equities for $19,973,000, and it was designed by the architecture firm CetraRuddy. Completed in 2008, it is one of the few full-service condominiums of its generation in the East Village, a neighborhood dominated by walk-up rental buildings.

The property is made up of two structures joined by a glass-enclosed bridge with an angled roofline that crosses a large rear courtyard. The main 13th Street building has 150 feet of street frontage and 77 apartments, and the smaller 14th Street section has 25 feet of frontage and 7 apartments. The street facade is clad in terracotta-colored panels with many glass balconies, and the lobby is lined in Pietra Bedonia stone.

Inside, apartments were finished with ceilings of about 9 feet 5 inches, floor-to-ceiling windows, glass pocket doors, white painted maple floors, and kitchens with stone countertops, Liebherr refrigerators, and Bosch appliances. Layouts range from alcove studios and one-bedrooms, including duplexes, to penthouses with private terraces. The rooftop pool drew wide attention when the building opened, and press coverage in 2010 reported early leak complaints and city fines tied to the pool, which the Department of Buildings said was not in the original plans.
