Built where a Manhattan church once stood
The Laurel rose on the northeast corner of East 67th Street and First Avenue, on a site CityRealty's building history says was previously occupied by the Bethany Memorial Church, a church built in 1910 and designed by the firm Nelson & Van Wagenen. Alexico Group, the development company run by Izak Senbahar and Simon Elias, bought the site and hired architect Costas Kondylis, known for shaping much of Manhattan's condominium skyline in the 1990s and 2000s, to design a residential tower in its place.
The building was completed in the middle of the 2000s condo boom on the Upper East Side. It was designed with a glass and Indiana limestone facade, and its apartments were laid out with long entrance galleries, high ceilings between 9 and 12 feet, and floor-to-ceiling windows facing the East River and the Manhattan skyline. Kondylis, working with interior designer Brian Callahan, specified Poggenpohl kitchen cabinetry, Sub-Zero refrigerators and Gaggenau appliances, finishes aimed at buyers trading up from older prewar and postwar Upper East Side buildings.
The Laurel was marketed heavily on its amenity package rather than its address alone, since First Avenue in the high 60s sits a longer walk from the subway than blocks closer to Lexington or Madison. Its 'Trophy Club' fitness center, built around a 50-foot lap pool and a triathlon training area with dedicated equipment, and its 'Laurel Club' entertaining space were positioned as reasons for residents to stay in the building rather than join an outside gym or club.

Excellent for those looking for luxury on First Avenue. The building has a boutique feel despite having 129 residences.
Buying here
The service in this building is terrific. Residents stay for a long time, and availability can be rare.
The best lines
The F line is a great studio, but the larger apartments are terrific. The views of the East River from the higher floors are incredible.
Mistakes buyers make
First Avenue is a great place to live. It allows for easy access to and from the city. It is also centrally located to Midtown and other popular areas of the city.
What a listing won't tell you
The pride the staff takes in maintaining this property. The lobby is exceptionally clean, and the energy is really positive!
Living at The Laurel
The Laurel sits at the eastern edge of Lenox Hill, in the stretch of the Upper East Side closer to the East River than to Central Park. St. Catherine's Park, a small city park, is directly across the street, and the block also sits near Rockefeller University and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Subway access requires a longer walk than blocks further west, but the neighborhood has strong local bus service and quick access to the FDR Drive.
